About Snap-a-Slip.
Snap-a-Slip is a South African receipt scanner that runs entirely inside WhatsApp. You photograph a till slip, send it to our number, and it comes back as clean bookkeeping data: merchant, date, total, 15% VAT and a category, filed and ready for SARS.
There is no app to download and no login to remember. That is the whole idea, and it is the reason the habit sticks when receipt apps do not.
Why WhatsApp, and not an app
Every South African freelancer we spoke to had already tried a receipt app. The pattern never varied: install it, use it twice, forget it, and go back to the shoebox. The software was rarely the problem. The friction was. Capturing a receipt meant unlocking a phone, finding an icon, waiting for a splash screen and signing in again, all while holding a slip and a coffee at a till.
WhatsApp is already open. It is already the app people use to send a photo to someone. Sending a slip to a number is a motion South Africans make dozens of times a day without thinking about it, so it survives a busy Tuesday, which is the only test that actually matters for bookkeeping.
So we did not build an app. We built the thing on the other end of a message you already know how to send. The dashboard exists, but you only open it when you want to review, correct or export something, which for most people is once a month.
Who it is for
Snap-a-Slip is built for people whose receipts arrive faster than their admin time allows, and for the bookkeepers who inherit the mess.
Freelancers and sole proprietors
You are a provisional taxpayer and every legitimate expense you fail to capture is tax you pay for no reason. Snap the slip when you get it, and February stops being a reconstruction project.
Small businesses and teams
Several people spending on the company's behalf, all of them bad at paperwork. They already have WhatsApp, so there is nothing to roll out and nothing to train.
Drivers and people on the road
Fuel, tolls, car washes, parking. High volume, small amounts, thermal paper that fades. Capture happens at the pump instead of never.
Bookkeepers and accounting firms
Clients who send a shoebox in February are the job nobody wants. Invite them to a workspace and the slips arrive already extracted, categorised and VAT-split.
Built in South Africa, for SARS
This is not a global product with a South African price list. The 15% VAT split, the SARS expense categories, the five-year retention rule, the R5,000 and R50 tax-invoice thresholds and the provisional-tax calendar are the specification, not a localisation layer added afterwards.
SARS accepts a clear, unaltered photograph of a receipt, and a clean photo usually outlasts the original: thermal till slips fade within months, while the image and its extracted data are still legible at audit years later. We keep the original photo attached to every record for exactly that reason.
We are a South African company handling South African data under POPIA. Receipts are never sold or shared, and you can export or delete everything you have sent us at any time. The detail is in our privacy policy.

Who builds it
Snap-a-Slip is built and operated by Atab, a South African software company. It is a small team, which is why you can reach a person on the same WhatsApp number you send your slips to.
